Papers, 1800-1890.

The collection covers the period 1800-1890 and includes three generations of the family. The octavo volume is the journal of Louisa Adams Park for the period 1800 to 1801, copied by Dr. Park in 1848, and consisting of a "stream-of-consciousness" detail of her daily life and thoughts while Dr. Park was on his voyages. It includes commentaries on the various prescribed medical treatments for, and the eventual death of, her infant son, references to the French Revolution and to Thomas Jefferson's new "French" government in 1801, trips to neighboring towns, details of her many dreams, and life in Windham, N.H., Acton, and Salisbury, Mass., where she alternately lived. Dr. Park also copied into the journal several letters sent to him by his wife during those years. The folder contains letters, poetry, and legal documents. The letters were written by Park to his daughter Louisa, Agnes to her stepchildren, and primarily by Louisa Jane Park Hall to her stepsons Francis Parkman Hall (1833-1850) and William Ware Hall (1834-1864), wherein she refers to social events in Boston, church sermons, Francis Hall's precarious health, new household furnishings, rare books, and to the Cherokee Indians' troubles in Georgia in 1832, with mention of addresses delivered by Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) and Indian speakers on the subject. The collection also includes poetry written by Dr. Park, his wife Agnes Major Park, and all three children, especially his daughter Louisa, with such subjects as sisterly love, autumn, and death. The legal documents consist of land deeds, a document making Agnes Park trustee of Park's estate, and an inventory booklet and note to his wife in 1852 bequeathing his books and various possessions to specific family members.
